Child Support in New Jersey

Child support is the right of the child, not the parent. Public policy dictates that children should not be the economic victims of divorce or out-of-wedlock birth. All parents in New Jersey, married or not, are required to contribute to the support of their children. The payment of child support reflects this ongoing duty of both parents to financially support their children. In New Jersey, this duty generally continues until the children are emancipated or until a court orders otherwise.

Generally, the amount of child support you pay is based on these Guidelines. The Guidelines are very complicated, but effectively provide a clear framework for parents to know and meet their child support responsibilities.
